Petaluma, CA—An on-the-job accident left a Sonoma-Marin Fair employee without a leg Wednesday, June 23, 2010. According to a Mercury News Report, an unidentified employee was standing on the tracks of a roller coaster when he was struck, ostensibly severing his leg on impact. While the victim underwent surgery after the incident, he was reportedly listed in stable condition as of Thursday. Fair officials and authorities from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, otherwise known as Cal/OSHA, now have the task of determining how or why the injurious workplace accident occurred.

Reports indicated the worker, an East Bay resident in his mid-twenties, was standing on the tracks of the “Wacky Worm” roller coaster for unknown reasons. At around 2:20 p.m., the roller coaster slammed into the employee. The tracks are elevated about 5 feet above the ground. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel subsequently rushed the badly injured worker to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was reportedly released from the operating room, sans leg, at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“No one can figure it out… He was not supposed to be in that restricted area. We’re hoping for a speedy recovery,” said Harry Mason, CEO of Brass Ring Amusements’ Midway of Fun, which operates the carnival at the Sonoma-Marin Fair. Mason noted that he wished to speak with the injured worker as soon as possible, in an attempt to figure out why the incident might have occurred. The victim was apparently employed as a ticket collector on another ride at the Petaluma fair. “We’re still very, very upset… In 30 years this has never happened,” Mason contended. Cal/OSHA is expected to conduct a formal probe into the on-the-job mishap.
