Mount Carroll, IL—Rescue teams worked for over 12 hours to free three workers who were trapped inside a grain bin in northwestern Illinois. Rescue teams were called to the grain bin owned by Consolidated Grain & Barge Enterprises in Mount Carroll around 10 a.m., as reported by ABC Go Local-WLS.
Rescuers worked for over 12 hours trying to free the teens by drilling holes in the side of the bin to let thousands of pounds of grain pour out. Just after 10 p.m., 19-year-old Alejandro Pacas and 14-year-old Wyatt R. Whitebread were pulled from the grain bin and pronounced dead.
A third victim, 20-year-old William Piper, survived, but was listed in serious condition after being flown to a Rockford hospital for treatment.
Mt. Carroll resident, Lee Behrems said, “They were in the bin…they were trying to break through to get the corn to come out and that’s when things fell through.”
Officials are investigating the fatal grain bin accident. It was not reported if officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigating.
