Childress, TX—A wrong-way driver is to blame for a fatal head-on collision that killed a Parker, Co. family. The fatal crash occurred around daybreak on Sunday, August 1, 2010, on U.S. 287, about 13 miles east of Vernon, as reported by KWGN.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety in Childress, a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling the wrong way on the northbound lanes of U.S. 287, near the Texas-Oklahoma boarder, when it collided head-on with a northbound 2006 Hummer H-3.
Witnesses reported that both of the vehicles exploded on impact. One witness, Paul Koester said, “When the vehicles hit, flames went sky high instantly.”
Other witnesses said the driver of the Tahoe, Spencer Joe Risinger, 38, of Wichita Falls, was headed north but made a U-turn and headed the wrong way down the same lane of the divided four-lane highway.
A Parker, Colo. family of four, who were riding in the Hummer, was killed in the violent collision. The victims were identified as Robert Behn, 45; his wife, Lisa, 48; son Jordan, 18; and daughter Morgan, 15. The family was reportedly on their way home from a baseball trip in Dallas.
Risinger was also killed in the wreck.
Police officials believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the deadly crash. A full investigation is underway.
