Denton, TX—A plane went down shortly after departing from the Denton Municipal Airport (DTO) Sunday, July 18, 2010, severely injuring a husband and wife onboard. The accident occurred around 7 p.m., when the couple’s single-engine aircraft crashed into a field approximately one mile away from the airport, as reported by the Dallas Morning News.
According to Trooper Lonny Haschel, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety (TX DPS), the pilot apparently radioed air traffic controllers shortly after taking off from the Denton Airport, alleging the plane had “insufficient power” as it attempted to gain altitude.
The aircraft then reportedly took a sharp right turn and began its unintended descent. Officer Ryan Grelle of the Denton Police Department reported the unspecified plane crashed north of FM 2449, sparking a fire on impact.
The unidentified husband and wife were subsequently airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital for treatment of their serious injuries. According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Lynn Lunsford, the victims appeared to have suffered extensive burns in the crash-induced blaze.
Officials from the FAA are expected to conduct a full investigation into the injurious Texas plane wreck.
