Pelham, NH – A 62-year-old female driver crashed her Honda CRV into a Pelham home Tuesday, July 27, 2010, after her sandal became stuck on the gas pedal, as reported by WMUR.com. The driver’s grandchild was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
According to reports, the driver’s sandal became stuck on the gas pedal as she was driving down the road. In her attempts to free the sandal from the pedal, her other sandal got caught as well. This mishap sent the car veering off the road where the vehicle swiped a maple tree and continued through the oncoming home’s driveway and into the house.
Ralph Barrett, the homeowner, said he knew immediately what happened by the sound the crash made. He explained, “There’s nothing else the noise could have been.”
He told reporters he was in another room at the time of the crash, but quickly moved into the living room to check on the four children who were watching television.
Sgt. Anne Perriello of the Pelham Police Department used this accident to issue a warning for anyone driving with inappropriate shoes.
She stated, “If your sandal gets caught, try to get your car into neutral, and if you can, use the opposite foot to press on the brake. Obviously keep your eyes on the road. Based on this accident alone, the operator’s eyes were paying attention to the sandals.”
