Emporia, KS—A mud truck accident at the Lyon County Fairground killed a teenage spectator on Saturday, July 31, 2010. The mud truck was competing in a mudathon competition when it veered off course and hit a pickup truck that the teen was sitting on, as reported by the Kansas City Star.

The Shawnee teenager, Hannah Deaver, 17, was reportedly watching the mud event from the bed of a Ford Ranger pickup truck when the mud truck veered from the course for unknown reasons.

Both Deaver and a second teen, Alexandria M. Allen, 17, of Emporia, were rushed to Newman Regional Health in Emporia by ambulance. Allen reportedly suffered non-life threatening injuries. Deaver was then flown from Newman to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, were she died from her injuries.

Police identified the mud truck driver as David Williams of Kansas City, KS.

Emporia police and Lyon County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the fatal accident.

The mudathon is reportedly a competition where vehicles are driven though an obstacle course with mud pits.
