Secaucus, NJ – Product Liability Alert: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday, August 11, 2010, that Goya Foods, Inc., of Secaucus, New Jersey, has issued a recall of its 14-ounce packages of Frozen Mamey Pulp. The product carries a potential health risk from Salmonella.
While no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, the decision to pull the product was made after a sample from one package of Goya brand Mamey Pulp from Las Vegas, NV was tested by the FDA and yielded positive for Salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in the young, frail or elderly, as well as those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons who contract the bacteria may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. If the infection transfers to the bloodstream, arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis may arise.
The product was distributed in AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, NM, NV, OR, TX, UT and WA to various retail stores.
The pulp comes in a 14-ounce plastic package and is not marked with a lot number or expiration date. The UPC is 041331090803.
Consumers who purchased the product are urged to discard the product and contact Goya Foods, Inc.’s Customer Affairs for a complete refund. Product liability questions may be directed to (800) 275-4692 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., EST, Monday through Friday.
Goya Foods, Inc. conducted a traceability assessment and review of its food safety documentation after receiving the FDA Salmonella test results. All aspects were found to be in compliance and were negative for the presence of Salmonella.
