Gainesville, GA—A violent golf cart crash occurred at a political fundraiser for 9th District U.S. representative Tom Graves and left four people with various injuries Friday, August 6, 2010. Georgia State Patrol (GSP) officials contended the injurious accident happened after the golf cart’s brakes failed while traveling down a hill, according to information provided by WSBTV.

Reports indicated a golf cart was shuttling guests to a private campaign event when the brakes abruptly malfunctioned. Unable to stop the out-of-control golf cart, the unidentified driver sideswiped several parked cars. Upon doing so, the golf cart reportedly flipped, subsequently ejecting the passengers.

Passenger Beverly McDowell, 45, was reportedly flown to Atlanta Medical Center via medical helicopter. She was listed in critical condition after the golf cart wreck.

Two others were rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center to be treated for unspecified injuries. Their identities were not released.

Passenger Mark Marlowe was also occupying the golf cart when it crashed and overturned. He allegedly told the Gainesville Times that he fractured his shoulder in the accident.

According to a June 2008 issue of The American Journal of Preventative Medicine, golf cart accident-related injuries increased by a staggering 132 percent from 1990 to 2006.

It was estimated that in 1990, 5,772 suffered golf cart injuries. In 2006, on the other hand, estimates rose to 13,411. Between 1990 and 2006, almost 150,000 individuals, ages 2 months to 96 years, were hurt in golf cart-involved incidents.
