Tampa, FL—A violent SUV rollover crash claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and a teenage boy, injuring seven others as well, on Saturday, July 31, 2010. The accident occurred after one of the sport utility vehicle’s tires blew as it traveled southbound on Interstate 75, as reported by Tampa Bay Online.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), nine people, including seven children, were occupying a 2003 Ford Expedition when one of the SUV’s tires popped for unknown reasons.
Driver Freddie James, 45, subsequently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The SUV eventually came to a rest in the median. The rollover accident happened around 7:30 a.m.
Three minors were ejected from the SUV on impact. Reports indicated only one out of seven children in the vehicle was properly restrained at the time.
While paramedics were dispatched to the scene shortly after the accident, 35-year-old Shakia Peterson succumbed to her traumatic injuries at the scene. Peterson was allegedly 36 months pregnant. Her unborn child did not make it. A 14-year-old boy identified as Roderick James was rushed to St. Petersburg-based Bayfront Medical Center where his injuries also proved fatal.
Six children, along with motorist Freddie James, were transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Victims seriously injured in the single-vehicle wreck included Freddie James; 10-year-old Fredquanda James; 10-year-old Caprice Dawkins; 15-year-old Jamkia Dawkins; and 17-year-old Jerome Dawkins. Martavius Dawkins, 16, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Manatee Memorial as well.
Reports stated all of the vehicle’s occupants were from Tampa.
