Baltimore, MA—A utility worker who fell into a hole and became trapped died in the tragic Saturday, July 17, 2010 accident. The fatal work-related accident occurred in the front yard of a home in the 1600 block of E. Cold Spring Lane around 12:40 p.m., as reported by the Baltimore Sun.
Officials with the Baltimore City Fire Department reported a man in his late 20s was repairing a sewer line in the front yard of a residential property when the accident occurred. The worker was apparently trying to climb out of the hole, when his ladder fell backwards, trapping the man in dirt up to his waist.
Emergency rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they realized they weren’t going to be able to remove the worker without the help of additional equipment. The worker then went into cardiac arrest.
Rescue crews managed to remove the man from the dirt about three hours later where medical professionals pronounced him dead at the scene.
Officials are currently withholding the identity of the worker at this time. A small, private utility company reportedly employed the worker.
