Colorado Springs, CO—A toddler slipped away from his mother and grandfather, whom each thought the other was watching the child, and wandered onto a nearby highway where he was struck and killed by a motorist. Colorado Springs police officers rushed to Highway 24 and Garrett Road at around 9:30 p.m., where they found the child lying in the roadway, as reported by The Denver Channel.

The 2-year-old boy, Jaydien Stroud, wandered down the 200 to 300-foot driveway away from his mother and grandfather, who had just returned from the grocery store, and onto the unlit highway.

A motorist reportedly did not see the child when the driver hit little Jaydien at over 50 mph. She immediately pulled over, and realized she had hit a child when she heard the boy’s mother and grandfather horrifying screams as they ran towards the scene.

The driver, the boy’s family members and others then desperately tried to administer CPR to the boy before he was rushed to an area hospital for treatment. Tragically, the boy did not survive.

The driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

A preliminary investigation concluded that the 2-year-old’s guardians were not at fault. The investigations are ongoing.
