Reno, NV—Two missing miners have been found dead at the bottom of a gold mine shaft. The miners went missing early Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Meikle mine, which is 55 miles northwest of Elko and 275 miles northeast of Reno, as reported by USA Today.
After 32 hours of tirelessly working to reach the workers, who were 1,300 feet underground, they were finally located on Saturday. The deceased miners were identified as Daniel Patrick Noel, 47, and Ethan Joel Schorr, 38, both of Spring Creek.
The miners were reportedly being lowered in a cage similar to an elevator, to inspect a pipe, when a vertical pipe broke from the wall and struck the cage the miners were in. The pipe that broke is about 2 feet in diameter and is used to transport crushed stones and rocks.
The mine is operated by its subsidiary Barrick Goldstrike Mines, which employs about 300 workers.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the fatal mining accident.
