Tampa, FL (Tampa Car Accident Attorney News)— A collision involving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a bicycle in downtown Tampa, killed a former U.S. Senate candidate and current director of the Florida Department of Veteran’s Affairs. The deadly collision killed the bicyclist, retired Adm. LeRoy Collins Jr., on Thursday, July 29, 2010, around 6:20 a.m., as reported by My Fox Tampa Bay.
Collins, 75, who is also the son of a former Florida governor, was reportedly riding his bicycle across south Hyde Park Avenue in a crosswalk, when he was struck by a SUV that was making a left turn.
The SUV driver, Margaux Manuel, 27, was making a left turn onto a one-way street from a red light at West Brorein Street, when she struck Collins. Manuel claims that she didn’t see the bicyclist in the crosswalk.
Collins was rushed to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of his injuries, but he sadly died after arriving for treatment.
Manuel was reportedly on her way to work at Tampa General Hospital, when the collision occurred. She and two other nurses administered CPR until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
