New York, NY – Residents of an apartment complex in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn began protesting Tuesday, August 17, 2010, claiming they have been subjected to despicable living conditions, as their building has progressively deteriorated over the years, as reported by NY 1 News.
The four tenants who live in the Grand Avenue building say they plan to sue the building’s owner for deplorable conditions such as chipped paint, leaky ceilings, broken toilets and holes in the floor. Furthermore, residents claim they were denied heat last winter.
One tenant told NY1 News they bought a cat recently in efforts to remedy the rat situation in the building.
Frank Gibbs described the pest problem as, “Huge rats, I mean six inches and above…And they will stand in the living room at night and just look at me.”
The current building manager said the majority of the problems plaguing the tenants were the fault of the previous building managers. The current manager took over the building only a few months ago.
He also claims he signed an agreement to fix the tenants’ problems by September 5.
The management company also reported that they plan to take the residents who have protested by not paying rent to court.
Residents have enlisted the aid of the Pratt Area Community Council in order to attract attention.
