Hagerstown, MD – A 20-year-old West Virginia man was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he walked along I-70 in Hagerstown, late Saturday August 14, 2010, and then struck by a second vehicle which proved to be a fatal blow, as reported by The Baltimore Sun.
The victim, James Lloyd Weatherholtz, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, had gotten into an argument with a passenger as they were traveling westward on the highway just before 11 p.m., Saturday. Weatherholtz pulled his car over near exit 29 and exited his vehicle. He began walking on the left shoulder of the interstate, according to police reports.
Witness reports claim a vehicle struck the man as he walked on the yellow line separating the shoulder from the roadway. The vehicle kept going.
After the initial blow, a 1998 Chevrolet Venture minivan driven by New Jersey resident Milagro Cordero struck Weatherholtz again.
State police said they received numerous calls from drivers reporting the incident. Troopers found Weatherholtz lying in the center median.
Weatherholtz did not survive his injuries.
The westbound lanes of I-70 were closed for approximately two hours as the incident was investigated.
Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call the Hagerstown barrack at (301) 739-2102.
