Miami, FL—An electrical explosion injured two Florida Power & Light (FPL) workers on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. The workplace accident occurred in the downtown SunTrust building, located on the corner of Southeast Second Avenue and First Street at around 2 p.m., as reported by the Miami Herald.
Officials reported that two FPL employees were working on an electrical panel in the vault of the SunTrust building, when an electrical explosion was sparked. Maintenance workers noticed that smoke was emanating from a seventh-floor electrical vault. The maintenance workers then immediately called the fire department for help.
One worker suffered first- and second-degree facial burns, while the other sustained minor leg injuries. The worker who sustained the burns was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. The other worker was treated at the scene.
The explosion led to a building wide power outage, which sent hundreds of people who working the building home early.
Officials say its unclear what caused the electrical explosion.
It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will investigate the blast.
