Orange County, FL—A motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving a car and Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) cruiser resulted in the death of an elderly man, which also left the deputy injured. The fatal two-vehicle wreck occurred at a Lockhart intersection near Altamonte Springs, Florida, according to information provided by Click Orlando.
Reports stated 91-year-old Orlando resident Edward Charles Soistman’s 2005 four-door Buick was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Magnolia Homes Road and Calloway Drive, when he tried to make a left turn.
Upon doing so, his vehicle collided with an Orange County sheriff’s deputy cruiser. The front of the cruiser reportedly smashed into the driver’s side of Soistman’s vehicle, seemingly killing him on impact.
The unidentified female deputy involved in the collision apparently suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.
While it was not yet clear who was at fault in the fatal crash, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report indicated charges were pending.
According to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, there were 2,978 traffic fatalities reported in 2008, 235 less than the year before.
