Suffolk, VA—A man who was trapped inside of a peanut holding tank was rescued, after he fell in on Thursday, July 29, 2010. The worker fell into the tank around 9 a.m., in the 300 block of Factory Street, as reported by WAVY.
Authorities reported that two workers were apparently checking levels inside the tank, when the worker fell in, likely falling about 60-65 feet.
By the time rescue teams arrived at the scene, the trapped worker already had a rope tied around his waste. A co-worker who was trying to pull the worker from the tank couldn’t pull him out.
Two responding firefighters tried another rope to the rope already fastened around the victim and pulled him from the tank. Fire fighters reportedly sent down an oxygen mask to the worker so he wouldn’t suffocate under the 15 feet of peanuts he was trapped under.
By 10:30 a.m., rescue crews had extricated the worker. The victim managed to walk down the tank ladder by himself and refused medical treatment.
It is unknown if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will investigate the workplace accident.
