Washington, D.C.—Following the massive recall of 550 million eggs for salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) say they have uncovered positive samples of salmonella, linking two Iowa farms to the outbreak, reports MSNBC.
As previously reported in, “Recall: National Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Hundreds; 380M Eggs recalled,” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that hundreds of people have become ill as a result of the outbreak. Officials believe the outbreak began in May. The salmonella outbreak has yielded no deaths, but at least 226 people in California have been hospitalized.
Federal FDA investigators discovered salmonella in the chicken feed at Wright County Egg. The same contaminated feed was also used at Hillandale Farms. The FDA also collected samples of salmonella in other locations around Wright County Egg.
The recall is not expected to expand any further. But investigations are still ongoing.
As of Thursday, August 26, 2010, the CDC estimated that there could be as many as 1,470 illnesses linked to the salmonella outbreak.
