Statesville, NC—More than a century after a train wreck was deemed one of the most catastrophic accidents in the history of North Carolina, a group of individuals set out with the hopes of seeing the “ghost train.” Shortly after beginning their excursion along the legendary train trestle, however, they found themselves running from a real locomotive, according to a Friday, August 27, 2010 WBTV report.
Intrigued by the story of a fatal 1891 train wreck over the Boston Creek, 12 amateur ghost hunters decided to go back to the scene around 2:45 a.m. As they were standing on the trestle, located near the 900 block of Buffalo Shoals Road, a train rounded a curve.
Though 11 people managed to escape by sprinting east and away from the approaching locomotive, a 29-year-old man was not so fortunate. Christopher Kaiser was struck by the train and reportedly succumbed to his traumatic injuries at the scene.
According to Iredell County Sheriff Phillip Redmond, two others suffered injuries while running from the approaching train. They were flown to an area hospital via medical helicopter. The extent of their injuries was not disclosed.
Norfolk Southern Railroad spokesperson Robin Chapman stated the eastbound train was made up of three locomotives and had no freight cars.
Redmond stated the train operators allegedly attempted to stop the train and warn the pedestrians that it was approaching. “All indications at this point are this is an accident,” he added. Nonetheless, investigations continue.
The Friday morning accident marked the anniversary of the 1891 train wreck, which occurred on August 27 around 2 a.m. as well.
