Delaware, IN—A collision between a school bus and dump truck Monday morning, August 30, 2010 left at least 14 people injured. The accident occurred along Indiana Highway 129 in Ripley County, as reported by WLWT.
According to Indiana State Police (ISP), 60-year-old Dorothy J. Huskey was driving the Jac-Cen-Del school bus when she traveled across Highway 129 and into the path of a dump truck.
Superintendent William Narwold said 14 students occupied the bus when the dump truck smashed into it on Highway 129 south of Indiana Road 250 around 8 a.m.
Ripley County dispatchers alleged injuries sustained in the crash seemed to be minor. Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze also stated the injured students, whose ages ranged from 6 to 16, were taken to Margaret Mary Hospital for treatment.
Huskey suffered minor injuries while the 28-year-old dump truck driver, Matthew T. McQueen, required medical attention for a head injury.
ISP troopers alleged Huskey’s failure to yield the right of way to the dump truck caused the bus-truck collision. However, reports did not disclose whether she was ticketed or not.
According to a WebMD report, there were 71 school bus passengers killed in crashes between 1994 and 2004. Accidents involving cars and light trucks, on the other hand, claimed 31,693 lives in the year 2004 alone.
