San Jose, CA— Three people were seriously injured, including one who lost a limb, when a teenage driver slammed into a stopped car along the shoulder of U.S. Highway 101 on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at around 3:25 a.m., as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred on the northbound shoulder of Highway 101, just north of Metcalf Road.
A Mitsubishi and a Toyota were reportedly parked along the shoulder while tending to a flat tire on the Toyota. A teenage driver, who was driving a Mercedes northbound on the highway, veered off the road and onto the shoulder where it collided with the rear end of the Mitsubishi.
The impact of the crash pushed the Mitsubishi forward into the Toyota, which severed the leg of a woman who was standing in between the two vehicles. The woman was identified as a 23-year-old San Jose resident.
The driver of the Toyota, a 23-year-old Morgan Hill man, sustained a major head injury, likely resulting in a potential traumatic brain injury (TBI). Both the San Jose woman and the driver of the Toyota were taken to the San Jose Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, who was identified as a 29-year-old Milpitas man, also suffered a major head trauma and internal bleeding in the crash. He was transported to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Mercedes, Eric Nun, 18, of San Jose, was taken to the Valley Medical Center for treatment of a fractured ankle, along with other “moderate injuries.” Police officers then booked him into the Santa Clara County’s main jail on a felony DUI charge.
A full investigation is underway.
