Chicago, IL—The Chicago Fire Department rescued a worker who plummeted from a Chicago River drawbridge while doing maintenance work on Thursday, September 2, 2010. The worker fell some 20 feet around 1 a.m., at the Washington Street bridge, as reported by WGN.
The unidentified worker was reportedly doing some maintenance work on the bridge, when he apparently slipped and fell into the working gears of the drawbridge.
The Chicago Fire Department was called to scene to help rescue the worker. Marine units were also called to the scene because initial reports indicted that worker fell into the water. But when the rescue teams arrived at the scene they found him between the gears of the drawbridge.
CFD Battalion Chief Dan Fabrizio said, “He was in a very tight spot about 30 feet down. We had to lower ladders and use ropes, the guys improvised and adapted. He’s doing good.”
The worker sustained arm injuries and was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was reportedly in fair condition.
It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would conduct an investigation.
