Wayne County, PA – Federal and county officials at the United States Penitentiary Canaan confirmed Tuesday, August 31, 2010, that a prison inmate was fatally stabbed by another inmate on August 23, as reported by The Times Tribune.
Inmate Jose Antonio Perez was involved in what officials termed an “isolated” altercation with an unidentified inmate which resulted in his death. While Kim Straesser, a spokeswoman with the Canaan, told the pres, “He was just pronounced dead as a result of his injuries,” she explained, “I can’t release any other additional details right now.”
Lackawanna County Coroner Joseph Brennan said Perez’s death was the result of a single stab wound to the neck.
Perez, 50, was serving a life sentence for charges of murder for hire and conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine.
The prison is home to 1,468 high-security inmates, according to recent U.S. Department of Justice statistics. The prison also houses minimum-security inmates at a separate satellite camp located near the high-security portion of the institution.
Officials have not clarified where inside the institution the incident took place.
Spokesperson Straesser referred all other questions to the FBI, as they are conducting the investigation. Efforts to reach an FBI public information officer were unsuccessful, according to The Times Tribune.
Perez’s death is the second in the facility this year.
