Miami, FL – A Florida and Rhode Island seafood company are accused of mislabeling approximately 1,500 pounds of Chinese salmon fillets as Russian salmon, as reported by the Boston Globe.
According to reports, federal authorities state Northern Fisheries and 48-year-old Brian D. Eliason of Rhode Island were charged Thursday, September 9, 2010, with conspiracy and for violating the Lacey Act, a measure that prohibits the false identification of any fish which has been, or is intended to be, imported, sold, purchased or received from any foreign country or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.
Hialeah, Florida-based Mark Platt and Shifco were indicted as well.
Eliason and Platt each face up to five years in prison if found guilty of the charges. Their seafood companies face a large fine and the salmon may be forfeited under a separate count of the indictment.
