East Providence, RI – Beginning on the week of September 13, 2010, the water level at the Turner Reservoir Dam in East Providence will be lowered to allow workers to build fish passageways, as reported by The Boston Globe.
Water levels will be lowered as far as 42 inches. Work on the dam is scheduled to begin on September 26.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says fishways will be built at Omega Pond Dam, Hunts Mill dam and turner Reservoir Dam in East Providence. Officials report the dams have prevented herring and shad from entering their spawning grounds in the Ten Mile River watershed.
The majority of the watershed, which has a drainage area of approximately 56 square miles, is in southeastern Massachusetts. A portion of the watershed is in northeastern Rhode Island, according to the Globe.
