Oakland, CA— Brake failure on a dump truck is reportedly cause of a 13-vehicle pile-up, which injured five people on Thursday, September 9, 2010. The multiple-vehicle collision occurred along the Grand Avenue off-ramp to Interstate 580, around 4:30 p.m., as reported by ABC Go Local KGO-TV.
Police officials reported that it’s a miracle that no one died in the wreck.
Officer Holly Joshi with the Oakland Police Department said, “The truck appeared to have been coming off of the freeway exit when it plowed into the first vehicle causing a chain reaction.”
The first vehicle the dump truck plowed into was a Honda, which completely crushed the rear-end of the vehicle. The driver of the Honda was rushed to the hospital, but was released by 9 p.m.
The Honda was reportedly sitting at a red-light, when the crash occurred. A total of 13 vehicles were damaged.
The driver of the dump truck claims his brakes failed. A full investigation is currently underway.
