San Francisco, CA—A massive explosion ripped through a neighborhood in the hills south of San Francisco, destroying 54 homes and killing at least six people on Thursday, September 9, 2010. The explosion also damaged 120 homes when it ignited around 6 p.m., which shot a fireball more than 1,000 feet into the air, as reported by FOX News.
Authorities stated that a reported 39 people were injured when a nearby gas line ruptured. The explosion sent flames flying into the air, which caught nearby homes on fire. The fire continued to roar as the burning homes and parked automobiles fueled the fire.
A total of 54 homes are said to be “destroyed,” and dozens of people were left with burns. Some victims sustained critical burns in the fire.
California Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado declared a state of emergency in San Mateo County.
Over 100 people were being sheltered at evacuation centers nearby.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. stated, “If it’s ultimately determined that we were responsible or the cause of the incident, we will take accountability.”
The blast was reportedly so intense that it knocked out the entire water system, which caused responding fire fighters to pump water from more than two miles away.
