Montville, NJ – A fatal motorcycle crash that occurred early Thursday, September 9, 2010 after the attempted armed robbery of a convenience store in Pine Brook, lead to aggravated manslaughter charges for a Florida man, as reported by the Asbury Park Press and Daily Record.
Michael Yodice, 22, of Brandenton, Florida, was charged with aggravated manslaughter and death by auto after an investigation of the crash that killed his alleged robbery accomplice, Christopher Vielee. Vielee’s age and place of residence was not released to the press.
An arrest affidavit filed by Montville Detective Andrew Caggiano stated Yodice and Vielee fled an attempted robbery of the 7-Eleven conveniences store on Changebridge Road in Pine Brook at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Montville Police Officers Sgt. Mark Olsson and Patrolman Scott DeMagistris responded to the call of a robbery, whereupon the clerk reported a white male demanded money and displayed what appeared to be a gun, according to the affidavit.
The officers saw a motorcycle fleeing the scene, and DeMagistris, joined by Montville Patrolman Ian Jacobsen, followed the bike southward on Changebridge.
DeMagistris realized the bike’s passenger matched the clerk’s description of the man who tried to rob him. When the driver of the motorcycle looked over his shoulder and saw the following officers, Jacobsen activated the vehicles’ lights and sirens, according to the affidavit.
The driver continued to accelerate and then lost control of the motorcycle while negotiating a turn. The passenger was thrown from the bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Officer Bianchi.
A Montville Police department spokesman said the driver was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries after the crash.
