Kannapolis, NC—A kindergartener suffered critical injuries when he was run over by a school bus on University Drive in Kannapolis. The injurious bus-pedestrian collision happened around 7:44 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010, according to information provided by WBTV.

Reports indicated 6-year-old Demarea Jwantae Porter ran after the westbound Bus #48 as it was turning into a cul-de-sac from University Drive.

Upon running off the curb he was initially standing on, however, the young boy fell into the road. The school bus’ right rear tires consequently struck the Royal Oaks Elementary School student, leaving him with critical injuries.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel reportedly rushed Porter to Concord-based Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast.

He was subsequently transferred to Charlotte-based Carolinas Medical Center via medical helicopter. He underwent surgery for his severe accident-induced injuries.

According to family members, Porter apparently “suffered internal bleeding in his stomach and on his brain.” He remained listed in critical condition at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte as of Thursday afternoon.

While no charges have been filed against Thomasina Colclough, the driver of the school bus involved, she was placed on paid suspension pending further investigations into the bus accident.

Investigators from the Kannapolis Police Department are expected to conduct a full probe into the traffic crash.
