Pensacola, FL—Three people were injured in a six-vehicle crash on the Pensacola Bay Bridge Friday morning, September 24, 2010. The accident slowed traffic in the northbound lanes of the roadway for approximately one hour, as reported by the Pensacola News Journal.
According to information provided, officials from the Gulf breeze Police Department and Pensacola Fire Department personnel rushed to the scene of a multi-car crash on the Pensacola Bay Bridge after 11:50 a.m., the time at which the wreck occurred.
Preliminary investigations seem to indicate 73-year-old Peggy Soelzer was driving her Dodge Neon along the bridge when she lost control for unknown reasons. Within moments, five additional vehicles became involved in the accident.
Gulf Breeze Police Office Chris Lanzetta alleged, “I believe one car lost control. It went straight down and ricocheted off a few cars and finally came to rest.”
The first chain-reaction crash also distracted a few other drivers, leading to a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes. However, no injuries were reported in connection with the second accident.
“The people were interested in what was going on on the bridge instead of paying attention to the road,” said Lanzetta.
Peggy Soelzer and her 92-year-old husband, Ralph Soelzer, were hospitalized as a result of the pile-up. Bradley Peterman, the 49-year-old motorist who’s Mercedes was also involved in the collision, was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
While Peggy and Ralph Soelzer were listed in good and fair condition respectively, Peterman has since been released from the hospital.
Further investigations into the chain-reaction crash are expected to be underway.
