San Diego, CA—A woman was injured when a pipe bomb exploded as the woman turned over her ignition of her pickup truck while leaving work on Friday, September 24, 2010. The explosion occurred in the 12000 block Via Hacienda in Rancho San Diego, around 4:30 p.m., as reported by KSWB.
According to officials, Connie Hoagland, 52, got into her pickup truck after completing her work day at a home day-care center, when she switched on her ignition to start her truck and the pipe bomb exploded.
Sheriff spokeswoman Jan Caldwell stated, “The explosion caused the (truck) to go backward several feet, and it rolled back into a parked car.”
When responding emergency crews arrived at the scene, Hoagland was found lying in the road. She was rushed to UCSD Burn Center for treatment. Hoagland underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
The truck was taken to a crime lab, where they discovered that the explosion was caused by a bomb. The truck is being processed for evidence. No suspects have been identified. Police officials are also trying to determine if the explosion is linked to another pipe bomb that was found two weeks ago on a roadway, just two blocks from Hoagland’s house.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Sheriff’s bomb-arson investigators are trying to determine if the incident was a criminal act.
