Santa Fe, NM—A father is facing possible negligence charges after his 1-year-old daughter’s neck got stuck between an electric car window and the door frame, as he slept in the car. The life-threatening accident occurred on Monday, September 27, 2010, around 2:30 p.m., at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, as reported by KRQE.
The father told police officials that he had fallen asleep with the car running while waiting outside the school to pick up his other child. The 1-year-old then stuck her head out the open window. Somehow the window rolled up on the child, trapping her neck.
Police officers don’t know who rolled up the window and they are looking into how long the father was asleep.
The sleeping man had no idea about the situation his daughter was in until another parent ran up to his car and banged on the window, waking him up.
The toddler was rushed to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where she was then airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
Santa Fe Police Department Sgt. Louis Carlos stated, “The medical staff is telling us she could have been without oxygen, without circulation, for up to eight to 10 minutes… She had some ligature marks around her neck.
A full investigation is underway. The father may face negligence charges, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
