Oakland, IA—A 69-year-old man was found dead inside a grain bin along Highway 6, Tuesday night, September 28, 2010. The man was reportedly helping two of his neighbors load grain when the incident occurred just outside of Oakland, as reported by Action 3 News.

The Pottawattamie County Sherriff’s investigators reported that neighbors indicated the man may have went up to the auger when the bin got clogged, and didn’t tell anyone what he was doing. When his friends couldn’t locate him minutes later, they immediately called 911; but unfortunately, it was too late.

When rescue teams arrived at the scene they began to cut holes on the side of the bin to help locate the man. The man was found; but sadly, he had passed away.

One of the farmers who were working with the victim was apparently so devastated that he actually leaped into the grain bin to look for him. The farmer was injured in his attempts to find the man. He was transported by paramedics to Jenny Edmonson Hospital in Council Bluffs for treatment of minor injuries.

The grain bin accident is under investigation. The Iowa State Patrol, Oakland Fire and Rescue, and Treynor Fire and Rescue all responded to the scene.
