West Palm Beach, FL—According to a recent report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five gay men are infected with the AIDS virus. The CDC study, published Thursday, September 23, 2010, took into account several thousand gay men residing in 21 major U.S. cities, according to information provided by the Associated Press.
The CDC report contended nearly 50 percent of gay men with the disease remain unaware that they even have it. Additionally, AIDS infection rates among gays allegedly increased 17 percent from 2005 to 2008.
Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC National Center for HIV/AIDS, contended, “This study’s message is clear: HIV exacts a devastating toll on men who have sex with men in America’s major cities… We need to increase access to HIV testing so that more … know their status.”
The study also found that 28 percent of black gays, 18 percent of Hispanic gays and 16 percent of white gays were among those infected with AIDS within the 21 major cities assessed.
Gay men with a higher level of education and income were also reportedly more aware of the virus then their socioeconomic counterparts.
The study was published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and took into account more than 8,000 gays.
