Carroll County, GA—Preliminary investigations into a fatal school bus crash indicated the driver, a trainee, lacked proper certification on his commercial driver’s license to operate a school bus. The unfortunate bus rollover accident occurred Monday, October 4, 2010, claiming the life of a high school student and injuring approximately 12 others, as reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
According to authorities from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), there is a “P” for passenger endorsement on Kenneth Herringdine’s commercial license. However, an “S” for school bus endorsement is missing from both his physical license and the computerized version.
While officials from the Carroll County School System would not provide documentation to prove that he was authorized to drive the school bus, they maintained he passed the test for a school bus endorsement.
Herringdine was driving the bus and was accompanied by his trainer, Sherry Davis, when the school bus veered off Highway 113.
The bus consequently overturned, resulting in the death of 17-year-old James Rashawn Walker, a student at Temple High. The bus wreck also left around a dozen others with unspecified injuries.
According to Superintendent Scott Cowart, “Any time you have a safety issue, you always review what happened and how it happened and all the processes that lead to any situation. Our No. 1 job is the safety and security of children.”
Both GSP and Carroll County school officials are expected to conduct a full probe into the deadly Georgia school bus crash. Herringdine and Davis were placed on paid administrative leave pending accident investigations.
