Fresno, CA—A 12-year-old boy was hit and killed by a train while on his way to school on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. The fatal accident occurred at Fruit Avenue, just south of Ashlan Avenue, shortly before 8 a.m., as reported by the Fresno Bee.
Fresno police officials reported, Daniel Madsen, a seventh-grade student from Wawona Middle School, his 15-year-old sister and some friends were walking to school, when the Daniel’s sister and another girl ran in front of an approaching Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train.
Daniel reportedly ran across the tracks after his sister when he was struck. Officials reported that the crossing arms were lowered and the conductor sounded the train’s horn as a warning.
Daniel is reportedly the second child to be killed at the very same crossing in less than two years. Last year, a teenager was shot at the same spot as Daniel’s accident.
Lena Kent, BNSF spokeswoman stated, “This is a sad reminder of the dangers of trying to beat a train. Trains cannot stop quickly, and it can take over a mile or more to stop. The train that hit Daniel was traveling about 45 mph.”
A full investigation is underway.
