Lake City, FL—Walmart and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are expected to investigate an incident in which a piece of metal was found in a carton of ice cream. According to a Tuesday, October 5, 2010 News 4 Jax report, the upset Florida woman whose child found the portion of metal has suggested the company take the product off store shelves immediately.
After a young girl discovered a piece of metal in her cup size carton of ice cream, the child’s distressed mother, Teresa McMillen, urged Walmart to recall all cartons of ice cream under the same brand name.
According to McMillen, “My daughter had it on the spoon and said, ‘What’s this?’… I took it, and there it was, two inches long of metal.”
“I’m just trying to let people know not to buy it… It’s obviously dangerous if that’s in there,” McMillen added.
While FDA officials were scheduled to retrieve the ice cream carton in question on Wednesday, Walmart alleges it has not received any other similar complaints concerning its Great Value brand ice cream.
In connection with the incident, Walmart stated the following:
”We are working with our suppliers and the FDA to swiftly investigate this matter. As an added precautionary measure, we have removed the product from shelves at the store until more is known. Neither Walmart nor the manufacturer have received any other complaints regarding this product.”
McMillen seems to believe the metal may have originated from a piece of machinery used in the manufacture of the ice cream. However, a probe would be necessary to determine the true source.
