San Jose, CA—An elderly woman was killed on Sunday, October 3, 2010, single-vehicle accident in San Jose’s Rose Garden neighborhood. Police officials believe excessive speed may have caused the fatal wreck, which occurred at around 6:50 a.m., on Park Avenue at Emory Street, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.
Two women were reportedly on their way to set up coffee before a morning fellowship at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church when the fatal accident occurred.
According to San Jose police Sgt. Ronnie Lopez, two officers witnessed the accident, who had just arrived to help preparing for the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose Half Marathon. “The officers hadn’t even exited their vehicles when they saw the car drive past at excessive speed, go out of control, strike four parked cars and then flip over twice before coming to a stop in some trees,” stated Lopez.
Lopez also stated, “There’s no indication of mechanical failure.”
The driver of the vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, has not been identified. The passenger, an 82-year-old female, was killed in the wreck.
The coroner’s officer identified the victim as Penelope Pries, of San Jose.
No one has been charged for the wreck. A full investigation is currently underway.
