West Palm Beach, FL—An unfortunate motorcycle accident resulted in one casualty and slowed traffic to a crawl before 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, October 19, 2010. The deadly motorcycle crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Okeechobee Boulevard, in close proximity to Benoist Farms Boulevard, according to information provided by the Palm Beach Post.
West Palm Beach Police Sgt. Matthew Bessette reported a motorcyclist, believed to be in his 20s, was speeding along the eastbound lanes of Okeechobee Blvd. when he lost control of his bike. The motorcycle subsequently careened into a ditch, causing the rider to be ejected.
The motorcyclist suffered traumatic injuries, which proved fatal at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending the notification of family members. A construction worker reportedly contacted police upon discovering the victim’s body.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reported extensive delays along the stretch of Okeechobee near the crash scene. Eastbound traffic was apparently rerouted onto Southern and Northlake boulevards.
Investigations into the fatal West Palm Beach motorcycle crash are expected to be underway.
According to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, 5,312 motorcyclist fatalities were reported in the United States during the year 2008. Of those casualties, 556 lost their lives in accidents that occurred in the state of Florida.
