Columbia, SC—An accident at the South Carolina State Fair led to the death of a worker on Monday, October 11, 2010. The worker was reportedly electrocuted while setting up a ride at the fair aeound 3 p.m., as reported by WLTX.
Roger Thompson, 43, of Brooksville, Fla. was working on the electrical equipment for the “Rainbow” ride, when he was fatally shocked. Apparently the tower on the ride was not secured at the time, causing him to suffer an electrical jolt.
Other workers reported hear a grunt from Thompson before they found him.
Responding emergency crews rushed him to Palmetto Health Richland hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Thompson was reportedly an employee with North American Midway Entertainment for more than 20 years.
Columbia and Richland County officials and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) are investigating the work-related accident.
It is unknown why the power wasn’t shut off while Thompson was working on the ride.
The South Carolina State Fair opens on Wednesday.
