Calipatria, CA– A brawl involving as many as 120 inmates resulted in two inmates being shot, which left another dozen injured on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. The fight broke out at the Calipatria State Prison, which holds about 4,000 men, about 120 miles northeast of San Diego near the Salton Sea, as reported by MSNBC.com.
The brawl caused the guards to use pepper spray and gunfire to break up the massive fight. Four rounds from a Ruger Mini-14 shotgun were fired, which hit two prisoners.
Ten inmates were transported to outside hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from moderate to serious. One of the gunshot victims had to be airlifted to a hospital for treatment. All the injured inmates are expected to survive.
Officials would not release details leading to the fight. This is reportedly the first significant disturbance at the jail in some time.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the Office of Inspector General’s Bureau of Independent Review and the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the fight, as required by law.
