Addison, IL—Claire-Sprayway Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled Fabric Protector due to respiratory hazards they product may pose. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects about 73,500 units, on Thursday, October 21, 2010.
Consumers who use the recalled fabric protector and are overexposed to the fumes, vapor, or spray mist run the risk of suffering from respiratory injuries. Illinois-based Claire-Sprayway initiated the recall after receiving 36 reports of consumers becoming overexposed to the product’s fumes, vapor or spray mist.
Of those reports, 34 consumers alleged they suffered from symptoms such as “coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath”. One consumer apparently suffered from a severe respiratory injury after becoming exposed to the dangerous product.
According to the CPSC news release, “The recall involves fabric protector which is an aerosol coating used to protect fabric. The fabric protector was sold under the following brand names: Sprayway® No. 980 Industrial Fabric Protector; 3D Fabric Protector; Auto Brite Fabric Protector Guardatela; Auto Magic® Fabric Protector No. 91-S; Crystal Aire Products #680 Fabric Protector; Falcon Labs® Spotless Fabric Protector; Quiltprotect™ Spray; Robbie’s™ Fabric Shield; Showcar Fabric Protector and Simoniz® System 5 Stain Sentry Fabric Protector. The can size is 13.5 oz., and the product code is located on the bottom of the can.”
The hazardous fabric protector was made available for purchase at auto supply, auto detailing, upholstery, textiles, furniture and fabric stores nationwide. The product, which had a value of approximately $10, was on the market from January 2005 through August 2010.
Consumers have been urged to cease use of the potentially harmful fabric protector and contact Claire-Sprayway to obtain a full reimbursement. Claire-Sprayway can be reached toll-free at (877) 416-7324 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, or online at www.clairemfg.com or www.spraywayinc.com.
