San Francisco, CA– An inmate at the Napa State Hospital is being held on suspicion of murder after a psychiatric technician was found dead on the fenced grounds on Saturday, October 23, 2010, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

At around 6:10 p.m., the body of 54-year-old psychiatric technician, Donna Goss, of Concord, was found behind the unit where she once worked. Police officials believe an inmate with “extensive criminal history” was behind the murder and robbery. The Napa County Sheriff’s Department is holding Jess Willard Massey, 37, for the murder and robbery.

Officials say because Goss was outside, her personal alarm would not have functioned. Authorities are unsure what caused the attack and subsequent murder.

Massey has been held at the hospital after being declared “not guilty by reason of insanity” in another 1997 case.

This is reportedly the first staff homicide at California’s mental hospital system in two decades.

A full investigation is underway.
