Ypsilanti, MI—A multi-vehicle crash Tuesday night, October 26, 2010, claimed the life of a mother and left her two young children with injuries ranging from non-life threatening to critical. Police say speed was a factor in the accident, which involved a total of six vehicles and left five other drivers injured, according to information provided by Click on Detroit.

Reports indicated a 37-year-old male was operating a Ford Mustang on a suspended license when he ran a red light at the intersection of Ecorse and Harris roads.

The Mustang, which was reportedly traveling at an excessive rate of speed, then slammed into a Ford Taurus. A 32-year-old mother and her two children, ages 11 and 13, occupied the Taurus at the time.

“He T-boned the woman and her two children, the car spun out into four other vehicles,” explained Derrick Jackson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department. The drivers of the four additional vehicles sustained minor injuries in the collision.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrived at the scene to aid those injured in the wreck. The mother, who remained unidentified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 13-year-old son was rushed to University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition while her 11-year-old daughter was taken to another hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mustang was hospitalized after the crash as well. He was listed in stable condition.

While toxicology tests have not yet confirmed whether the red light runner was intoxicated when he slammed into the Taurus at 70 to 80 miles an hour, Jackson contended, “He’s definitely got some history.”

“We’re not really sure at this point if he was under the influence. But he was clearly traveling at a high rate of speed and ran right through a very visible red light,” Jackson added. The Mustang driver apparently has a DUI on his driving record.

Investigations into the Ypsilanti Township six-car pileup are expected to be underway.
