Minneapolis, MN—A suspected drunk driving accident landed two University of Minnesota students in the hospital, where one victim later died. The automobile and pedestrian accident occurred on Fourth Street near campus on Sunday, October 21, 2010, just before 3 a.m., as reported by MNDaily.com.
Minneapolis Police officials reported two former University of Minnesota students were walking along a sidewalk in Dinkytown, when they apparently stepped off to avoid some construction work that was being done to the walkway.
John R. Peterson, 23, and University student, hit the pedestrians at the intersection of 12 Avenue and Fourth Street Southeast.
Pedestrains Kandyce Stoffel, 23, and Travis Smith, 23, were rushed by responding emergency crews to the Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. Stoffel was originally listed in critical condition, but she sadly succumbed to her life-threatening injuries at the hospital.
Police officials believe that Peterson may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was arrested on charges of criminal vehicular injury.
This is reportedly the second fatal accident this month involving alcohol and students from the University.
