Fort Lauderdale, FL—A landscaper is being treated for a head injury, after a cherry picker the man was working in was hit by a passing 18-wheeler on Friday, October 29, 2010. At around 9 a.m., the semi-truck struck the cherry picker along the southbound lane of North Federal Highway, as reported by the Palm Beach Post.
Lighthouse Point police reported that the landscaper was trimming tree branches in front of the Boston Market restaurant at 2451 N. Federal Highway, as the hydraulic arm reached over the outer southbound lane of North Federal Highway.
A passing semi-truck hit the machinery for unknown reasons.
The unidentified worker was wearing a safety lanyard, which was attached to the bucket, as required by safety regulations.
The worker sustained a head injury in the accident. Officials are still trying to determine how he sustained the injury. Responding emergency crews rushed the injured worker to North Broward Medical Center by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue for treatment of his potential traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The semi-truck driver, who was not identified, pulled over following the collision and talked with police officers.
The landscaper reportedly worked for G & V Shalom Tree Care.
Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are at the scene and investigating the landscaping company.
A full probe is underway.
