Detroit, MI—A hydraulic boom lift fell some 50 to 60 feet, leaving a worker with serious head and internal injuries on Monday, November 1, 2010. The work-related accident occurred in the 5400 block of Arbor Bay in the Genoa Township at around 9:35 a.m., as reported by the Livingston Daily.
Police officials reported that the Novi-based Westside Forestry worker was using a boom lift to cut down several tree limbs from a pine tree, when the hydraulic extension malfunctioned for unknown reasons. The lift then free-fell about 50 to 60 feet to the ground below, with the worker still in the lift.
The unidentified worker sustained serious head and internal injuries in the accident. Livingston County EMS rushed the man to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor for treatment of his injuries.
It is unknown what caused the hydraulic extension to fail. Michigan State Police and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration are conducting investigations into the work-related accident.
