Augusta, GA— Firefighters worked tirelessly on Saturday, October 23, 2010 to free two trapped workers from a collapsed trench. Sadly, only one worker survived the 11:30 a.m. construction accident, which took place outside the main office of Allen Homes, an apartment complex off of Laney-Walker Boulevard, as reported by the August Chronicle.
According to officials, the two workers were working in the trench when water began seeping into the dirt, causing one wall to collapse onto them.
Responding firefighters frantically dug with shovels and their hands to free them men. One man was pulled from the dirt and rushed to a nearby hospital.
Sadly, the other man was not as fortunate. Officials believe he likely died within minutes of being buried in the trench. He was pronounced dead at 12:46 p.m.
The deceased worker was identified as Jimmy Roubles, 37, of the 3300 block of Idlewood Drive in Augusta.
Rescue teas had to use reinforce air bags, blocks of wood, large steel plates and a pulley system to lift Roubles’ body from the trench.
Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct a full investigation.
