New Smyrna, FL—A two-vehicle collision left a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) with minor injuries Monday, October 18, 2010. The motor vehicle accident occurred on State Road 44, in close proximity to the New Smyrna Regional Shopping Plaza, according to information provided by the News-JournalOnline.com.
Reports indicated 59-year-old FHP Trooper Melvin Lane was in pursuit of a speeding motorcyclist after 9 a.m. Lane’s marked cruiser was traveling eastbound on S.R. 44 when he attempted to make a left turn onto Jungle Road.
Upon doing so; however, he drove into the path of a westbound 2003 Lexus sport utility vehicle. The SUV, which was being driven by 57-year-old Debra Ann Bennett at the time, consequently slammed into Lane’s patrol car. The cruiser flipped on impact.
While both Lane and Bennett were wearing seat belts at the time, Lane suffered minor injuries in the rollover accident. Reports did not specify whether he was hospitalized for those injuries. Bennett was not hurt.
Troopers alleged charges in connection with the New Smyrna rollover crash are pending.
According to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), out of 43,612 fatal single- and two-vehicle crashes in 2008, 2,659 occurred as motorists were making left turns. Left turns were listed as the second most common vehicle maneuver, after going straight, to contribute to fatal accidents.
